Thomas à Kempis wrote a series of four books, known as The Imitation of Christ. This is a paraphrase of the second book of that series.
As a paraphrase rather than just a translation, it answers the question, "What would this famous author be saying if he were talking to you now?", whereas a strict translation is an attempt to tell you the exact meaning of the original words.
