Carol Browne

Carol Browne is a British author of speculative fiction and non-fiction. She is best known for her historical fantasy novel The Exile of Elindel (2025) and her non-fiction work Being Krystyna — A Story of Survival in WWII (2016). Her writing spans fiction, poetry and memoir, and she has received awards for her contribution to Holocaust remembrance literature.

Carol Browne was born in Stafford and raised in Crewe, Cheshire, which she unquestionably considers her true hometown. Drawn to reading and writing from a young age, she studied English Language and Literature at Nottingham University, where she obtained an honours degree.

After graduating, she settled in the Cambridgeshire countryside, where she still lives and works.

Her career in fiction began with The Exile of Elindel, first published by Musa Publishing on 18 April 2014. After Musa Publishing closed, the book was reissued by Burning Willow Press on 8 October 2017. Next Chapter republished it in 2025 after the author had been without a publisher for three years.

Dilliebooks released Browne's first non-fiction title, Being Krystyna — A Story of Survival in WWII, in eBook format on 11 November 2016. The novella is a true story of a Holocaust survivor. It was written to preserve the memory of that survivor through personal testimony. The book was awarded a Certificate of Achievement in recognition of its significant contribution to Holocaust awareness.

In April 2022, her last publisher closed. This left her existing titles without a home until early 2025, when she signed with Next Chapter. During this period, she underwent a significant personal change. "I decided that my reclusive lifestyle had to change before I faded into oblivion," she wrote in April 2025.

She moved decisively from the rural boundary between two villages into a more connected area. There, she threw herself into community life, voluntary work and language learning. She also developed a keen interest in gardening.

In February 2025, she signed a contract with Next Chapter to reissue her work. "I feel like a newbie author again," she said. "It's scary!"

The Exile of Elindel (2025) is set in 6th-century Britain. Elgiva is a young elf. He was banished from Elvendom and forced to live among Saxons. She meets Godwin, a Briton enslaved by Saxons, and together they seek the Lorestone, an artefact that will stop a rising darkness threatening the elven realm.

They will travel a dangerous landscape and confront ancient powers. A reluctant elf boy and a stubborn pony will join them. As war looms, Elgiva must accept her true origins, and Godwin must embrace a hidden gift. This book is the first in The Elwardain Chronicles.

Carol Browne identifies as a vegan, pagan, and socialist. She also works as a proofreader and writes poetry.
