Brenda S. Tolian is an American author based in New Orleans. She writes dark fiction and poetry influenced by gothic, folk horror, and grotesque themes. Tolian is known for Blood Mountain (publisher: Raw Dog Screaming Press) and Bestial Mouths (nominated for the SFPA Elgin Award).
Born in New Orleans, Tolian holds degrees from Adams State University and a Creative Writing MFA from Regis University. She earned a Doctorate in English Literature Pedagogy from Murray State University. Tolian is a Professor of English and a member of the Horror Writers Association and the Angela Carter Society.
Her work appears in anthologies such as Folk Riot, Listen To Your Skin: An Anthology of Queer and Self Love, 101 Proof Horror, Consumed Tales Inspired by The Wendigo, The Jewish Book of Horror, and Twisted Pulp Magazine issue 3. Tolian also writes academic texts on postmodernism, obscure literature, and female agency in texts.
Her recent nonfiction, American Magdalene, is forthcoming from McFarland & Company. She has published poetry in multiple journals and was a featured poet in the Horror Writers Association’s Showcase Vol. 8. Tolian’s recent work also appears in Ba’lat Ov, Gramarye, and The Journal of the Chichester Center for Fairy Tales, Fantasy and Speculative Fiction.
Tolian’s writing explores queer, dark, and philosophical themes using visceral symbolism to reveal internal experiences. She often sets stories in the New Orleans French Quarter and the southwestern desert. Tolian’s work blends haunting narratives with poetic forms.
Currently, she is editing a novel, a new poetry collection, and a nonfiction book, all of which are expected to be published soon.
