Sudhamahi Regunathan

Sudhamahi Regunathan is an Indian author and translator known for her writing on Jainism. She works across adult and children’s literature and is recognised for titles such as Rishabhayan: The Story of the First King (2014) and The Colours of Desire on the Canvas of Restraint (2015). She also served as vice chancellor of Jain Vishva Bharati University in Ladnun, Rajasthan.

Sudhamahi Regunathan began writing with an interest in faiths and stories. Her early work included translations and adaptations of Jain literature. She has said that storytelling can help people learn compassion and coexist peacefully. Her writing focuses on narrative as a way to explore belief systems and daily ethics.

Her English translation of Acharya Mahapragya’s work appeared as Rishabhayan: The Story of the First King (2014). The following year, she published The Colours of Desire on the Canvas of Restraint (2015), which examines the Jaina way of life through narrative form. In 2019, she released From One Birth to Another: Stories from Jaina Literature. She later co-authored Taken Away: The Life of an Ordinary Monk with a Buddhist monk.

Regunathan writes in a storytelling style influenced by the dastangoi tradition. She has said that Jainism, though seen as austere, values restraint for laypersons and that restraint can shape poetry and other arts. She has noted that early Jain communities spread stories and language across regions.

In an interview, she remarked, “The Jainas had great stories and contributed to the Indian-ness of the continent.”

Sudhamahi Regunathan continues to write for children and adults. Her recent work for young readers is Hanuman the Flying Hero (2025). She has stated that myths offer continuity with the past and that Jaina stories weave suspense, moral insight and everyday characters.
