Sandi Wallace

Sandi Wallace is an Australian author of rural mysteries and short crime fiction. She is best known for her Georgie Harvey and John Franklin series, which includes Tell Me Why (2015), Dead Again (2017), Into the Fog (2018) and Black Cloud (2023). Tell Me Why won the Davitt Award Readers' Choice and was shortlisted for the Davitt Award for Best Debut. She has also won several Scarlet Stiletto Awards for her short crime fiction.

Sandi Wallace grew up in Victoria, Australia, where she developed a keen interest in crime fiction and the police. Her early reading of the Famous Five series introduced her to crime fiction and sparked her desire to write in this genre.

"I guess that started my addiction to crime and mystery books," she said. Wallace's pre-publishing career included stints as a journalist, paralegal, banker, personal trainer, carpenter and office manager. These varied experiences later informed the characters and settings of her stories.

Before her debut novel, Wallace wrote short crime stories and articles. Many of her stories have been published or entered into competitions, including several Scarlet Stiletto Awards. Her first published full-length novel was Tell Me Why, a rural thriller set in Daylesford and featuring journalist Georgie Harvey and police officer John Franklin.

"Tell Me Why was the first full-length work I wrote and my first published novel," she said. The novel was praised for its atmospheric setting and character-driven narrative.

Her second novel, Dead Again, picks up eight months after the events of the first book. Georgie is investigating the aftermath of the bushfires in Bullock, while Franklin is dealing with a crime spree in Daylesford. The two stories intersect. Wallace drew inspiration from the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires for the emotional backdrop.

"Everyone lost something or someone… the impact on each person seemed as indiscriminate as the fire," she explained.

Into the Fog continues the series, following Georgie and Franklin as they search for three missing children during a storm in the Dandenong Ranges. Black Cloud, the fourth book, deals with a fatal explosion and a compromised crime scene on a rural property near Daylesford.

Wallace has also published two short crime collections: On the Job (2021) and Murder in the Midst (2022). These include award-winning stories and explore crime from both police and civilian perspectives. Each story in the second collection features a different female protagonist facing serious crime.

Sandi Wallace lives in the Dandenong Ranges with her husband and their pets. She enjoys strength training, gardening, canoeing and driving in the country.
