Before We Say Goodbye

The seasons had continued to pass. Some people had come to this cafe and returned to the past. There were others who had not, still others who had left after hearing the rules.

‘Yes. I’m sure that would make my father happy too …’

‘Don’t worry, just be happy. It’s the only thing that makes me happy.’

‘I may not be able to do it as well as your mother would have … But …’

Kengo looked up.

‘But I still want you to tell me.’

Then he said abruptly, ‘Oh, here, take this …’ as if to escape her gaze. He reached into his waist pouch, brought something out and held it out to her.

‘I’ve been saving up to give it to you when you get married.’

‘I’m glad I’m your daughter.’

I’m sure Dad went to a lot of trouble to bring me my favourite takoyaki because he wanted to make me happy and see me smile. So, may my smiling face be his last image of me.

This is my last time to say goodbye. But there’s so much more to say.

Regret was the only word that filled her mind. All she could pay attention to was Kengo staring at her like that.

There’s nothing that can be done about that, I guess?’
