“I never forgot. I was thinking of the first time we met. Did you know who I was?”
“No.”
“So, you’re just that charming to everyone you meet?”

“This relationship isn’t real,” Tella groaned. “How could I be jealous?”
“Maybe you’re wishing it was real.”

“What are you trying to find, Donatella? Are you searching for some good in me? You’ll never see it, because it doesn’t exist.”

She wasn’t afraid of danger, though she preferred it in the form of swaggering young men.

“I didn’t think you cared about me,” he said.

“I don’t,” Tella snapped.

“You can call me Jacks.”

Nothing between them was real, because Caraval wasn’t real. People loved Caraval because it was a fantasy come to life; no matter how twisted the game became at the end of it all, it was still only a game.
