Stalkers in the Namib

10. STALKERS IN THE NAMIB — SA POLICE SERIES

In the unforgiving, forbidden diamond territory of the Namib Desert, the young and adventurous Constable Kobus van Deventer drives towards an enigmatic sign of life. A delicate wisp of smoke curling up in the desolate landscape. His first solo patrol in this deathly world transforms in an instant from routine to a perilous investigation when, at the smouldering fire, he discovers only a half-eaten fish and a single, gigantic barefoot track in the red sand.

The mystery deepens when his police jeep vanishes and the tracks lead him to a forgotten ghost town that exists on no map. It is a place of creaking floorboards, abandoned houses, and an ominous silence. Here, he comes face to face with the owner of the track. The notorious and sadistic murderer, Claus Zederberg, who has escaped from death row. In a moment of brilliant daring, Van Deventer succeeds in capturing the cunning murderer, but his victory is short-lived.

Zederberg, however, is not alone, and overnight the hunter becomes the prey. Disarmed and trapped, Kobus is relentlessly hunted by Zederberg, who is now armed with a Mauser rifle and bent on revenge. A deadly game descends into an inferno when Zederberg transforms the house in which Kobus is hiding into a flaming hell. Kobus’s struggle for survival is a desperate race against time, the elements, and a psychopath for whom murder is a pleasant game. Trapped between the endless dunes and a murderer who will stop at nothing to secure his freedom, Kobus must face more than he ever thought possible. Will his police training and resourcefulness be enough to outwit the wily Zederberg? Or will the Namib’s red sand become his final resting place, yet another victim of the stalkers who wait for their prey in the shadows?
