This tale of intrigue begins with the kidnapping of the bride, Julia, on the first day of the couple's honeymoon. With the help of various friends and the interference of foes, Alistair Granby, agent of the Crown, rescues his new wife from the kidnappers. In doing so, he enters into a contract with the kidnappers, and through a series of adventures, contrives to save the day with even more help from his friends.
