J.A. Andrews is a British author of psychological thrillers, best known for his tense, twist-filled stories that explore hidden secrets and sinister motives. His novels often use the first-person perspective to bring readers closer to the fears, feelings, and actions of his characters.
Andrews is a member of the Crime Writers Association and the author of Mummy’s Boy (2019), I Let Her Go (2020), Behind Her Smile (2021), and Below Deck (2025).
Born in Plymouth, Devon, J.A. Andrews grew up with a fascination for thrillers and horror novels. He wrote his first complete manuscript at sixteen after reading works by Stephen King and James Gabriel Berman. Although he qualified in Accounting and Finance between 2001 and 2005 and worked as a Civil Servant, writing remained a long-term pursuit. He also developed an interest in games journalism and ran the website ThisisXbox for nearly a decade.
Between 2003 and 2009, Andrews worked on the Channel 4 television programme How Clean Is Your House?. As part of the cleaning team, he helped plan approaches to each property and apply health and safety procedures.
“The smells and sights from that show could haunt me if I dwelled on it, but there is nothing more satisfying than seeing the homes scrub up really well,” he later recalled.
In 2017, Andrews self-published his first erotic thriller, testing the possibilities of Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing platform. Though it was later withdrawn, the experience led him to concentrate fully on the thriller genre.
He wrote Mummy’s Boy through 2018, and in 2019, signed a contract with Hera Books, later part of Canelo, for commercial publication. He also partnered with Saga Egmont for audiobook editions, including exclusive releases of I Let Her Go and Behind Her Smile.
His most recent novel, Below Deck (2025), follows Grace Thomas, a social media influencer seeking solace after a tragic accident. On a Mediterranean cruise, Grace becomes trapped in a spiral of paranoia, memories, and possible danger.
