Carol Goodman Kaufman

Carol Goodman Kaufman is an American author, best known for her work in crime fiction and children's literature. She writes under both her full name and the pen name Carolinda Goodman. Her mystery novel The First Murder (2024) received a Readers' Favorite 5-star rating. She is also the author of Crak, Bam, Dead (2025), the first in the Mah Jong Mayhem series, and the children's book Once in a Full Moon.

Carol Goodman Kaufman holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Organisational Psychology from Colorado State University. Her doctoral research focused on gender in the workplace. She later completed a post-doctoral fellowship in criminology at Northeastern University's Brudnick Center for the Study of Violence and Conflict. She has worked for Fortune 500 companies and consulted for non-profit organisations. Kaufman has taught at the College of the Holy Cross and Worcester Polytechnic Institute and has published in academic journals and popular media.

She was a visiting scholar at the Brudnick Center when she wrote Sins of Omission: The Jewish Community's Reaction to Domestic Violence (2003), published by Westview Press. Her current research at Brudnick focuses on two areas: the experiences of children in high-conflict divorces, and the lives of former extremists who now advocate nonviolence. She is working on this second project with Brudnick Director Gordana Rabrenovic.

Kaufman volunteers with several local and national organisations. In her spare time, Carol enjoys reading, gardening and cooking from around the world. Her interest in food and its cultural history has led to a body of writing she shares on her blog, A Moveable Feast. "I love to cook and eat," she says, "and I've always wondered where certain foods come from.

Her fascination with puzzles and storytelling led her to crime fiction. "There's nothing more puzzling than a murder mystery," she explained. The First Murder (2024) follows Chief Constable Caleb Crane as he investigates a suspicious death in a small village in the Berkshire hills. Although the death is ruled accidental, Crane suspects foul play. The case tests his loyalties and forces him to confront personal doubts as he seeks justice in a tight-knit community.

Kaufman continued the genre with Crak, Bam, Dead (2025), a cosy mystery starring food writer Kiki Coben. After a disappearance during a game of mah-jong, Kiki is drawn into a multi-location investigation. From Sherwood to a cruise ship, the story follows her and her friends as they piece together clues in a case of murder and suspicion.

Kaufman writes for children as Carolinda Goodman. Her book Once in a Full Moon explores the names of the moons through rhyming verse and illustrations by Mariia Luzina. "It's just magic," she said, describing her inspiration after seeing a large moon rise above the street. The book also reflects her connection to the Jewish calendar: "Life revolves around the calendar in such a beautiful way."
