Andy Redsmith

Andy Redsmith is a British author of humorous fantasy crime fiction. He is best known for Breaking the Lore (2019) and Know Your Rites (2019), the first two books in the Inspector Paris Mystery series. His debut won the 2017 WordsWithJam First Page competition, judged by author Alison Morton.

Andy Redsmith was born in the northwest of England and grew up in Liverpool and Runcorn. He studied at the University of Salford and has lived in Manchester ever since. “The people there are great,” he writes, “but we don’t talk about football.”

Before writing fiction, Andy worked in computing long enough to remember ALGOL. “It’s not quite as dead as Latin,” he said, “but well on the way.” His career in IT brought him into contact with a wide range of personalities—some clever, some eccentric—none of whom, he insists, resemble the characters in his books.

Breaking the Lore (2019) introduces Inspector Nick Paris, a whisky-drinking Manchester detective with no time for magic—until a murdered fairy is found crucified. In a city that suddenly includes witches, dwarves, elves and demons, Paris must abandon logic to solve a growing mystery. The novel blends police procedural with fantasy, described by Morton as a “clever way of plunging us into a situation where questions are the only way out.”

Know Your Rites (2019) continues Paris’s journey. Now a reluctant celebrity in the magical world, he longs for ordinary cases but is again pulled into supernatural investigation. The new case features a dwarf with musical ambitions and darker threats beneath the surface. Paris must once again navigate the complex politics while solving a murder.

Andy Redsmith lives in Manchester with his wife and adult son.
