Nadine Aisha Jassat is a writer working in the UK who writes poetry and verse novels. Jassat is best known for the poetry book Let Me Tell You This (2019). Jassat has won a Scottish Book Trust New Writers Award and has been nominated for the Carnegie Medal.
In 2019, Jassat published the poetry book Let Me Tell You This (2019) with 404 Ink. The book addresses racism and gender based harm. The poems also focus on women’s bonds and on heritage. Jackie Kay called the book “a punchy, powerful debut”. Kay added that the poems show “real panache”. The same book was shortlisted for the Edwin Morgan Poetry Award. The poetry later entered the Scottish SQA school syllabus.
Jassat’s work has also appeared in major anthologies. These include Picador’s It’s Not About the Burqa, Polygon’s The People’s City, and Bloodaxe’s Staying Human. The Picador book was shortlisted for the Foyles Non-Fiction Book of the Year. Jassat has also been published in 404 Ink’s Nasty Women.
Alongside adult poetry, Jassat writes verse novels for children. The novels are published by Hachette Children’s Group. Two titles are The Hidden Story of Estie Noor and The Stories Grandma Forgot (And How I Found Them). The illustrator Sandhya Prabhat worked on both books. Jassat also wrote The House At The Edge Of The World, illustrated by Flavia Sorrentino.
Jassat’s children’s work has gained many shortlist places. These include the Alexandra Palace Award and the James Reckitt Hull Book Award. The work has also been longlisted for the UKLA Book Award and the Jhalak Prize. The Hidden Story of Estie Noor was nominated for the 2025 Carnegie Medal.
Sophie Anderson described The Stories Grandma Forgot (And How I Found Them) as “one of those books that truly makes the world a better place.” The Guardian called The House At The Edge Of The World “Charismatic, enchanting”. Love Reading 4 Kids praised the book as “moving, magical, and filled with meaning.”
Jassat has also built a career in live work and teaching. Jassat has taught and performed in the UK and abroad. Media work has included BBC Authors Live sessions with schools. Touring work has included a tour of South Africa with Jonathan Ball. Jassat has held writer residencies at the Lagos Poetry Fest and at Scottish school sites. The same record also notes a long history of creative practice work.
Awards and shortlists also include adult work beyond 2019. Jassat’s adult writing has been shortlisted for a Herald Scottish Culture Award for Outstanding Literature and has also won a Scottish Book Trust New Writers Award.
