Russian prose writer, poet and bard. He has lived in the United States since 1979, having been forced to leave the USSR after the publication of samizdat song lyrics on "camp" themes under his surname. His books have been translated into English, French, and German.
He is a member of the Russian PEN Center (an organization that unites poets, writers and journalists of various literary genres).
Winner of the German Pushkin Prize, awarded in 2001 on the aggregate — "for the work created by the writer since the 50s, which made him one of the leading personalities of Russian literature of the XX century".
In 2011, Yuz Aleshkovsky's "A Little Prison Novel" won first place in the "large prose" category of the Russian Prize, the main international literary competition for Russian-speaking writers from all over the world.
