David Burrett Reid

David Reid is a British non-fiction writer and strategic communications expert. He is best known for Running the Risk (2025), a book that explores how we understand and manage threats in an ever-changing world. Risk expert Paul Slovic praised the book as “one of the best” on the subject.

David Reid studied geology and earth sciences at University College London, where he gained an MSci. He later became a visiting fellow at UCL. Reid has worked in science, engineering and public policy, and is currently Director of Global Advocacy and Partner Campaigns at Lloyd’s Register Foundation. The foundation supports global safety through research and innovation.

During his 20-year career, Reid has led public engagement and communications for several organisations focused on science and social impact. These include the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and the Cheltenham Science Festival, where he served as director. He founded Matter PR, a specialist agency supporting science and engineering organisations.

He has advised governments, NGOs and international institutions on public engagement and risk policy. His work focuses on how evidence and communication can influence systems that protect people and the environment. “We need to connect knowledge with action, and communication is the bridge,” he has said in interviews.

Running the Risk (2025) examines the concept of risk in everyday life and global systems. Drawing on history, science, and case studies, it reveals how societies respond to disasters, data threats, and environmental change. The book includes chapters on Hurricane Katrina, the Fukushima disaster, rising sea levels in Indonesia, and the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

David Reid lives in the UK, serving as a trustee for The Oxford Trust and BRE Trust. He is also the Head Rowing Coach at St Peter’s College, Oxford.
