Stephanie Landsem is an American writer of historical fiction. She is best known for Code Name Edelweiss (2023) and The Fault Between Us (2025). In 2024, Code Name Edelweiss won the Carol Award in the Historical category.
Stephanie Landsem was born in Yellowstone National Park. Her father worked for the National Park Service, and the family stayed close to national parks. In college, Landsem majored in history. The author later said she had not written fiction at that stage.
In 2007, Landsem was a stay-at-home mother and was weighing a return to work. A talk with her daughter changed that plan. The daughter asked, “What would you do if you could do anything?” Landsem replied, “I’d write historical fiction.” When Landsem said writing sounded hard, the girl answered, “You’d never let us get away with that kind of excuse!” Landsem began to write soon after.
The writer first looked for a period and a story. A sermon on the woman at the well gave Landsem that start. She asked who the woman was and what followed after the meeting with Jesus. That idea became The Well (2013), Landsem’s first novel. An agent then sold the book to Simon & Schuster in a three-book deal. The next books were The Thief (2014) and The Tomb (2015).
After the Living Water novels, Landsem turned to later periods. In A Far-Off Land (2021), the protagonist moved to 1930s Hollywood. Code Name Edelweiss (2023) followed with a plot about Nazi activity in Los Angeles before the Second World War. That novel later brought Landsem the 2024 Carol Award.
Landsem’s most recent book is The Fault Between Us (2025). The novel is set in 1959 Yellowstone and follows sisters Claire, Bridget, and Frannie Reilly. Their reunion comes just before the Hebgen Lake earthquake. The book draws on real events and on family history.
Landsem said, “I wanted to write the story of this cataclysmic event.” She also used talks with her mother and aunts for period detail.
Stephanie Landsem now lives in Wisconsin with her husband and pets.
