Brad Thor

Brad Thor is an American author renowned for his political and military thrillers. He is best known for his long-running Scot Harvath series. His debut novel, The Lions of Lucerne (2002), launched a career that has produced twenty-five thrillers, including Blowback (2005), The Last Patriot (2008) and Black Ice (2021). Backlash (2019) was nominated for a Barry Award, and Black Ice was named ThrillerFix Best Thriller of the Year.

Born Bradley George Thor Jr., he graduated cum laude from the University of Southern California. He studied creative writing, film, and television production. Before becoming a novelist, he created and presented the public broadcasting television series Traveling Lite. He later worked as a media contributor, appearing on major networks including ABC, CNN, and Fox News to discuss terrorism and global threats.

Thor served as a member of the Department of Homeland Security’s Analytic Red Cell Unit. He also lectured law enforcement agencies on future threat scenarios. In 2008, he travelled to Afghanistan to shadow a Black Ops team while researching his novel The Apostle (2009).

His short story The Athens Solution (2006), featuring Scot Harvath, was first published in the Thriller anthology. He once said, “One of my favourite things is when people tell me they didn’t get any sleep last night because they were following Harvath around.”

He is known for not outlining his books. “I want to have the same experience writing the book that you will have reading it,” he explained. He describes his method as organic, comparing it to "walking into your garage through the back door". His process involves writing daily, often in long sessions as deadlines approach.

Short, cinematic chapters characterise his writing style. “It’s a rollercoaster ride. I have to give people a chance to catch their breath, but not for long,” he explained. Thor aims to create immersive narratives with constant momentum. “Trust me. Strap in tight; you’re going to have a blast,” he tells readers.

His most recent novel, Edge of Honor (2025), sees Scot Harvath return to a changing America. The story follows a dangerous conspiracy within the US government. Harvath must confront shifting alliances and unseen enemies while trying to prevent national collapse.

Thor’s fiction often predicts real-world events. “Politics, both domestic and international, are my game,” he says.
