Jack London

Jack London was an American novelist, journalist, social activist, and short-story writer whose works deal romantically with elemental struggles for survival. At his peak, he was the highest-paid and the most popular of all living writers. Because of early financial difficulties, he was a largely self-educated past grammar school.

London drew heavily on his life experiences in his writing. Jack London spent time in the Klondike during the Gold Rush and at various times was an oyster pirate, a seaman, a sealer, and a hobo. His first work was published in 1898. From there he went on to write such American classics as Call of the Wild, Sea Wolf, and White Fang.

Quotes

The land itself was a desolation, lifeless, without movement, so lone and cold that the spirit of it was not even that of sadness. There was a hint in it of laughter, but of a laughter more terrible than any sadness—a laughter that was mirthless as the smile of the sphinx, a laughter cold as the frost and partaking of the grimness of infallibility. It was the masterful and incommunicable wisdom of eternity laughing at the futility of life and the effort of life. It was the Wild, the savage, frozen-hearted Northland Wild.
