Public details on birthplace and education are not stated. Martin built her career through short fiction first. Her stories have appeared in Mystery, Crime and Mayhem, a quarterly magazine. She also appears in the Holiday Spectacular Advent calendar of Christmas stories.

She then moved into long-form series work. The Witches Three Cozy Mysteries follows three witches in St Paul. They guard a time portal between the present day and 1920s St Paul. The setting draws on Summit Avenue and the Jazz Age. The series blends murder cases with a touch of light magic and friendship.

Charm School (2018) opens the series. Amanda Clarke leaves small-town life for a grand house on Summit Avenue. Music from the 1920s St Paul seeps through to the present day. The portal brings risk, along with the first case of murder. Work Like a Charm (2019) continues Amanda’s trials. A neighbour dies next door to the charm school. The weapon dates to Prohibition, which links the past to the present. Charm Offensive (2019) finds the trio split across cities and years. A friend seems to vanish from history in 2019. The case tests their rules for time travel and memory.

Martin also writes The Viking Witch Cozy Mysteries. She writes The Weal and Woe Bookshop Witch Mysteries as well. The bookshop series centres on a scholar named Tabitha Greene. It is set near the old Mill District in Minneapolis. A summer job at a shop in a pocket world changes her life.

Cate Martin lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
