Nivashni Nai Sukdhev

Nivashni Nair Sukdhev is a South African journalist and author. She is a senior journalist at The Sunday Times. She writes romance novels and memoirs. Her first book, What's on My Mind? Making Babies (2020) is a memoir about infertility.

Nivashni Nair Sukdhev was born in 1981. She grew up in Pietermaritzburg. As a child, she received a toy typewriter as a gift. She said: "I knew from the moment I received a toy typewriter that I wanted to be a journalist". She wrote stories and reported on her family's news.

Sukdhev studied at the Durban University of Technology. She obtained her National Diploma in Journalism in 2001. She recalled fond memories of the sunshine in the foyer between lectures. She also remembered the bunny chow from the cafeteria at City campus.

After graduating, Sukdhev became a journalist at The Sunday Times. She became an award-winning senior journalist. Throughout her career, she interviewed presidents and superstars. She travelled throughout KwaZulu-Natal to find untold stories of ordinary South Africans.

Sukdhev battled Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and infertility. She documented her journey on Facebook. She said: "When I declared a war on PCOS and infertility on Facebook, I gained an online following". She was hospitalised for three months to save her unborn child. Her son was born at 32 weeks, weighing 1.3 kilograms.

In 2020, she met a nurse who was in tears hearing her story. This gave her the courage to write her first book. She realised many people suffer in silence and look for stories of hope. Her son is now a healthy six-year-old.

What's on My Mind? Making Babies was published in 2020. The title comes from Facebook's question "What's on your mind?" She said: "For me, it was making babies". The book is a personal account of her battle against PCOS and infertility.

In February 2022, Sukdhev ventured into romance fiction. Her debut romance novel Fireworks, was published that year. The book is a romantic comedy.

She published Kissing Her Senseless in 2023. The book is another romantic comedy. She wrote her fourth novel, Pillow Talk, in 2023. The plot developed in her mind during the last week of the second school term. She was on her way to fetch her son from school. By that evening, she had written 3,000 words. Two weeks later, she had a 45,000-word manuscript.

Sukdhev wrote the book on her mobile phone. She said: "I found it easier to write it on my cell phone". She explained that turning on the laptop felt like more work while balancing her job, motherhood, and writing.

Pillow Talk is a modern story of ambition and love. The book celebrates friendship, following passion and embracing life's unpredictable journey. Shona Shah walks out of her family business to forge her own path. The bridal designer discovers she must look at her family's past to move forward. She launched the book at the Durban International Book Fair in August 2023.
