Julia Huni

Julia Huni is an American science fiction author known for humorous and character-driven stories. She is best known for the Space Janitor series, beginning with The Vacuum of Space (2019), as well as the Colonial Explorer Corps, Recycled World, and Krimson Empire series. Her work blends light adventure with humour and has reached readers across several subgenres of science fiction.

Julia Huni grew up in the Pacific Northwest of the US. After studying Computer Science and National Security, she joined the United States Air Force, where she served for over twenty years. During this period, she worked on a NASA programme and later described herself as a “rocket scientist.” Her career included moves across the country before she returned to the Pacific Northwest with her family. She has a spouse, three children, and a dog named Pippin.

Over the years, Julia held a range of jobs outside writing, including information technology specialist, choir director, executive assistant, college instructor, and stay-at-home mother. She later joked that she had also been “that lady at the information booth in a tourist town.”

Reflecting on this range of roles, she has said, “Writer is the best job ever, because I get to make stuff up. Stuff I wish were true; stuff I’m glad isn’t true.”

The path to authorship began during a family cruise to Alaska in the 1990s. While discussing writing with her brother, she recalled hearing an anecdote about a well-known fantasy writer who had been told to write down the stories in his head. “Normal people don’t have that story? Maybe I should write mine,” Huni remembered thinking.

In 2007, after her husband retired from the Air Force, the family travelled across the United States by motorhome, covering 8,000 miles in three months. The journey gave Huni time to begin writing seriously. She worked for several more years before publishing her first book. In 2019, she released Recycled World, followed the same year by The Vacuum of Space, the opening volume in the Space Janitor series.

Since then, Julia Huni has written more than twenty science fiction novels. She has also co-authored the Krimson Empire series with Craig Martelle and launched the Colonial Explorer Corps series with The Earth Concurrence (2023). In parallel, under the pen name Lia Huni, she has published several romantic comedies.

Her fiction is marked by humour, light pacing, and strong female protagonists. Asked about the challenges of writing mysteries in space, she observed, “The hardest part of the writing itself was just keeping track of all the stuff I’d invented.” She often stresses that humour comes naturally, noting, “The warm and fuzzy part—that’s just how I am.”

Julia Huni has also experimented with crowdfunding, using Kickstarter to support audiobook projects. Looking back on her late start in publishing, she has said, “I wish I’d started earlier—there are so many stories to tell.”
