Living Sober: Life Beyond Alcoholism Guide

“For indeed the body is not one part but many. 15 If the foot says, “I’m not a hand, so I’m not part of the body,” that doesn’t make it stop being part of the body. 16 And if the ear says, “I’m not an eye, so I’m not part of the body,” that doesn’t make it stop being part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, how could it hear? If it were all hearing, how could it smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged each of the parts in the body exactly as he wanted them. 19 Now if they were all just one part, where would the body be? 20 But as it is, there are indeed many parts, yet just one body. 21 So the eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you”; or the head to the feet, “I don’t need you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be less important turn out to be all the more necessary; 23 and upon body parts which we consider less dignified we bestow greater dignity; and the parts that aren’t attractive are the ones we make as attractive as we can, 24 while our attractive parts have no need for such treatment. Indeed, God has put the body together in such a

Introduction
Alcoholism is neither a laughing matter nor an easy-to-defeat adversary. It has wrecked millions of people’s lives and families all over the world. It’s an enemy worth acknowledging because the moment you let your guard down, it’ll pounce on you like a lion hunting for its prey. It’s relentless and unyielding, making it a very dangerous enemy.

Sobriety may be a very challenging goal to achieve but it’s one that’s very much attainable. Be encouraged that while alcoholism can be a very formidable enemy, it’s not an undefeatable one. With enough perseverance and wisdom, you can win the lifelong battle for sobriety.

While perseverance can only come from you, wisdom can come from different sources. One of them is this book. Here, you’ll learn strategie

on how to keep alcoholism in check and live the rest of your life undefeated by this monster. But more importantly, I hope that, more than just learning how to defeat the beast, you’ll also be encouraged to take action towards staying sober for the rest of your life.

If you’re ready, turn the page and let’s begin.

Chapter 1: Finding your Meaningful Purpose
One of the reasons why many people are addicted to alcohol is – let’s be honest here – excitement. Alcohol is a substance of fun and excitement. It helps people like Dr. Koothrappali – he from the hit show Big Bang Theory – talks to women with the confidence of a Valentino and people who are otherwise boring to talk to become the most fun people in the room.

In the beginning, becoming sober is a very exciting thing. But after months and years of routine therapy sessions, meetings and other goings on with life, life can start to become boring for many recovering alcoholics. As such, they tend to reminisce about the “good old days” of alcohol, which then becomes a set up for potential relapse into the addiction. Remember, boredom is a very strong factor which explains why many people start to and continue drinking alcohol beyond normal levels. It may be the case for you as well.

If you started drinking and got way deep into it in an attempt to escape the boredom of an ordinary life, it is very important that you realize boredom really isn’t the underlying reason but rather a symptom of something more serious. What is that more serious thing? It’s a lack of purpose for living. As such, excitement isn’t the real cure for alcoholism and the means by which to stay sober. It’s living a life of purpose.

It’s almost impossible to separate lack of purpose and alcoholism. For many alcoholics, they don’t know their life’s purpose and, as such, fail to live out their life’s purpose. Believing that the gaping hole they’re feeling in their lives is merely a lack of “excitement” and an abundance of boredom, they go for the quickest hit and fix – alcohol. Most of the time, their closest friends are in on it as well making it even more enticing to drink a lot and frequently.

But here’s where things start to get worse. Alcohol will only go so far in terms of excitement before life starts to become boring again. Thinking more alcohol will do the trick, many people start drinking more and more until they become full-blown alcoholics. By that time it’s too late for many who aren’t able to recover. But fortunately for you if you’re an alcoholic reading this book, there is hope. You can recover and stay sober by living a life of purpose where boredom is trumped and
