Crypto Taxes and Records: How to Track Wallets, Trades, Airdrops, Staking, and DeFi Income

Crypto tax problems rarely come from one difficult formula. They come from scattered wallets, exchange exports that do not match, rewards that arrived without a clear value, and transactions that looked like “just a transfer” until it was time to file.

You do not need to remember everything. You need a system.

Crypto Taxes and Records presents a practical, records-first workflow for turning fragmented digital-asset activity into an organized, reviewable tax file. Whether you use centralized exchanges, self-custody wallets, decentralized exchanges, staking platforms, liquidity pools, NFT marketplaces, or mining and validation services, the book shows you what to capture, how to reconcile it, and where the difficult judgment calls begin.

Inside, you will learn how to:

Build a master index of every wallet, exchange account, chain, custodian, and protocol you used

Create a transaction log that preserves dates, quantities, fees, valuation sources, transaction hashes, and ownership context

Understand income at receipt, basis, proceeds, disposals, holding periods, and capital gains or losses

Track lots using FIFO or documented specific identification

Record crypto-to-crypto swaps without double-counting the two sides of the transaction

Document airdrops, hard forks, gifts, staking rewards, liquid staking, DeFi lending, yield farming, and liquidity-pool activity

Maintain NFT, mining, validator, MEV, equipment, and royalty records

Use tax software intelligently while keeping control of your own source data

Reconcile broker reports, including Form 1099-DA, with your complete records

Prepare a year-end close, preserve records, respond calmly to an inquiry, and know when professional advice is warranted

The book uses a U.S. federal framework and points you toward primary IRS sources, while the underlying records workflow can be adapted to other jurisdictions. It clearly distinguishes general principles from areas that depend on current guidance, technical facts, business status, valuation, custody, or the taxpayer’s specific circumstances.

Stop treating your crypto history as a pile of disconnected transactions. Build a record you can understand today, reconcile at tax time, and explain years from now.

This book is for education and general information, not individualized tax, legal, accounting, investment, or financial advice. Tax rules and forms change; confirm the current requirements for your filing year and consult a qualified professional for material or unusual transactions.
