Emily King

Emily R. King is a Canadian author of young adult fantasy novels. She is best known for The Hundredth Queen (2017), the first book in a series of four. The sequel, The Fire Queen, was released later the same year.

Emily R. King was born in Canada. She began writing in earnest in her mid-twenties. At the time, she was a young stay-at-home mother looking for a creative outlet. “I wanted something just for me. Something that would stretch my imagination and talents," she said. From the beginning, her goal was publication.

She started engaging with other writers online and joined the blogging community for writers. Through blogging, she met critique partners and beta readers, many of whom she still works with. King emphasised the value of these connections, saying: 'No one understands a writer like another writer.'

Her first published novel, The Hundredth Queen, was released in June 2017. This launched a fantasy series exploring themes of identity, courage, and survival. The second volume, The Fire Queen, followed in September of that year.

Alongside her writing, King has offered advice to aspiring authors. She recommends listening to critiques, revising thoroughly, and researching the industry. “Every word you write, every piece of information you attain, brings you one step closer,” she says. She also advises being patient and using careful timing when approaching agents and publishers.

When discussing book marketing, King emphasises the importance of personal interaction. 'One-on-one contact is key,' she says, adding that writers should avoid over-promoting themselves on social media. She believes that the biggest challenge for new authors is time management. She encourages writers to focus only on what is feasible.

King has also spoken openly about rejection. She responds methodically: “First, I get upset and feel hurt and dejected, and then I rally.” She sees rejection as an opportunity to learn and improve.

Currently, Emily R. King lives in northern Utah, where she writes while raising her children.
