The Person Who Drives Them

The Person Who Drives Them is a practical companion for the spouse, adult child, relative, or friend who has become the default driver for someone in cancer treatment. It does not discuss medicine. It discusses the calendar that keeps changing, the parking deck that eats an hour, the waiting room where you sit with your own fear, the cost of missed work, and the question that arrives every morning at the drop-off curb: do I go in or stay with the car. Across eleven chapters it builds a scheduling system that survives a bad week, a route through the hospital that stops being a daily puzzle, a set of word-for-word scripts for asking a specific person to take a specific shift, and a defensible plan for the waiting-room hour that includes using part of it for yourself. It assumes no partner, no paid leave, no savings, and no second car, and it offers low-cost and no-cost options alongside the ones that require money. It names the red flags that mean calling the oncology team or emergency services today, states plainly that treatment plans differ by person, hospital, and country, and leaves every clinical question where it belongs, with the oncology team. What it gives the driver is a system, a script, and permission, none of which require the patient to be doing well for the driver to use them.
