The Puddle Beside the Tray

The Puddle Beside the Tray is a calm, practical guide for the cat owner crouched by the litter tray at two in the morning, watching a cat scrape the wall, the floor, or the air instead of covering anything. It does not diagnose, does not promise a fix, and does not shame. Instead it breaks the event into four observable parts — stance, aim, surface, aftermath — and shows how each part can be used as a clue rather than a verdict. The book explains why aftermath is the loudest and least informative part of the sequence, how to record what actually happened in plain language, and what to bring to a vet visit. It states the safety boundary clearly: a sudden change in behavior, especially litter tray problems, hiding, or a cat who has stopped eating, is a reason to see a vet first, because pain and illness present as behavior in cats. Biting, aggression between cats, and anything involving a child are routed to a vet and a qualified, force-free behaviorist. Punishment is never recommended. The goal is not a guaranteed resolution but a better question, asked from observation instead of fear.
