The story describes Arnold’s life on the Spokane Indian Reservation. He is encouraged by a high school teacher to attend an all white public high school in the off-reservation town of Reardan, Washington.

There are altogether 65 comic illustrations in the novel. These comic illustrations sometimes serve as punch-lines which the plot is unfolding and Arnold’s character is being described.

The major themes or subjects which the novel explores are poverty, alcohol, bullying, violence, and homosexuality.
