I stand and wait until the last of the wagon is emptied of the Goblin King's gift, the smell of dirt and life still clinging to the wooden slats. Nothing about this gift bodes well for me, but with the lives of hundreds hanging in the balance, I have no choice but to accept it for now as I prepare myself for whatever deception is to come.

Tyton scowls at her. “What happened? You didn't say that you were injured; what the hell are you doing coming down all those stairs if you’re hurt!”

A blush creeps over her cheekbones, and she ruffles her skirt, her voice sharp as she snaps, “I’m not injured. She's lying.”

“If there is any other path the Fates should choose for me, I’ll be the first to drag a knife across her throat.”
