This special volume is dedicated to Geoffrey Chew who passed away on April 11, 2019, at age 94. He is best known as the architect and passionate champion of the bootstrap concept, sometimes called nuclear democracy. His work influenced generations of particle physicists. His passion for physics was an inspiration for his many students and associates. From the Chew-Low theory for meson-nucleon scattering to Analytic S-Matrix, Regge Poles, and Bootstrap principle, his originality left its mark in ways that continue to the present. With contributions from Chew's former collaborators, students, and friends, the book will cover various facets of his life and impact on physics.Contributors include Steven Weinberg, Steven Frautschi, Gabriele Veneziano, Peter Landshoff, Carl Rosenzweig, Basarab Nicolescu, William Frazer, David Gross, John Schwartz, Ling-Lie Chau, Chung-I Tan, Richard Brower, Carleton DeTar, R Shankar, David Kaiser, Fritjof Capra, and others.Contents: PrefacePhotosRecollections:The Analytic S Matrix and the Ideal Mentor (William R Frazer)How Geoff Got Started (James S Ball)Interactions with Geoff Chew (Owen Chamberlain)Interactions with Geoff Chew (Steven Weinberg)On the Uniqueness of Physical Theories (David J Gross)My Postdoctoral Years at Berkeley with Geoff Chew (Steven Frautschi)Salesman of Ideas (John Polkinghorne)The Bootstrap: Still a Relevant and Prolific Idea (Gabriele Veneziano)Geoffrey Chew and Regge Poles (A Donnachie & P V Landshoff)Memories: Geoff Chew, S-matrix, Bootstraps and Dual Topology (Carl Rosenzweig)Geoff Chew and the S-Matrix (Alan White)Geoff Chew of Illinois (Jerrold Franklin)From the S Matrix to String Theory (John H Schwarz)Geoffrey F Chew (1924–2019): A Passion for Physics and the PhD Thesis Professor for Me and Seventy-plus Others (Ling-Lie Chau)The Reggeon Field Theory, Describing Financial Markets in Crises, and Predicting Crises (Jan W Dash)Pomeron — A Bootstrap Story (Chung-I Tan)Back to the Future: Reflection on Geoffrey Chew's Legacy (Richard C Brower)Recollections of Life as a Berkeley Chew PhD Student in the Late 1960s (Carleton DeTar)Recollections of Geoff (R Shankar)A Passion for Physics (Marvin L Goldberger)Architect of the Bootstrap:Recollections of Geoffrey Chew (David Kaiser)Bootstrap Physics: A Conversation with Geoffrey Chew (Fritjof Capra)The Bootstrap Principle and the Uniqueness of Our World (Basarab Nicolescu)Reprints of Selected Articles:Effective Range Approach to the Low-Energy p-Wave Pion-Nucleon Interaction (G F Chew and F E Low)Application of Dispersion Relations to Low-Energy Meson-Nucleon Scattering (G F Chew, M L Goldberger, F E Low and Y Nambu)Regge Trajectories and the Principle of Maximum Strength for Strong Interactions (G F Chew and S C Frautschi)Hadron Bootstrap Hypothesis (G F Chew)Multiple-Production via Toller Variables (N F Bali, G F Chew and A Pignotti)An Integral Equation for Scattering Amplitudes (G F Chew, M L Goldberger and F E Low)Single-Surface Basis for Topological Particle Theory (G F Chew and V Poénaru)Unification of Gravity with Electromagnetism (G F Chew)Extended-Lorentz Quantum-Cosmology Symmetry Group (G F Chew)Readership: Students, researchers and academics interested in particle physics.
