This novel revolves around Selby Clive and his wife Nita Clive. Nita Clive puts her husband at arm's length because he was older than her. She decides to cheat on him with Frank. Frank reveals he has no intention of marrying her, so she returns to Selby. Both Frank and Nita assume that Selby is aware of their tryst. They begin to suspect Selby is a homicidal maniac. Their proof is that they discovered a document stating that Selby had changed his name from Sanderby to Selby. In Canada, a man named Sanderby murdered his wife.
