A wide-ranging history of English towns and cities covering al aspects, political, social, cultural and economic. Towns are vital spheres of national life and 'important forcing houses for modernisation and modernity'. And it is impossible to tell national history without understanding the experience of towns and cities. Each will be covered in all aspects including physical structure, social experience, cultural standing and contribution, and environmental impact.
