Miyamoto Musashi

The Book of Five Rings

Miyamoto Musashi's Go Rin no Sho or the book of five rings, is considered a classic treatise on military strategy, much like Sun Tzu's The Art of War and Chanakya's Arthashastra.

The five “books” refer to the idea that there are different elements of battle, just as there are different physical elements in life, as described by Buddhism, Shinto, and other Eastern religions. Through the book Musashi defends his thesis: a man who conquers himself is ready to take it on on the world, should need arise.

    🎯Worthwhile

Unless you are a lost teenager or a Kendo Practitioner : you won't learn that much intellectualy given Mussashi's rather Niche
expertise even in Martial Arts field in somewhat estoric Phrasing . Still, it's nice to hear what an excellent Edo Period warrior who Survived over 30 duels has to say on succeeding in life .

    🎯Worthwhile

It's funny how I've been introduced to Musashi through a manga and how much of an impact it had on my life and my views of the world. The book might sound like it's for "martial arts/warriors" but it's not directed at one group of people, instead it teaches men and women how to find their way in life and in their endeavours, one does not need to be a samurai or warrior to read these texts and find valuable knowledge.

Generally speaking, the Way of the warrior is resolute acceptance of death.

    Rat's Head, Ox's Neck

"Rat's head and ox's neck" means that, when we are fighting with the enemy and both he and we have become occupied with small points in an entangled spirit, we must always think of the Way of Strategy as being both a rat's head and an ox's neck. Whenever we have become preoccupied with small detail, we must suddenly change into a large spirit, interchanging large with small.

This is one of the essences of strategy. It is necessary that the warrior think in this spirit in everyday life. You must not depart from this spirit in large-scale strategy nor in single combat

In strategy it is important to see distant things as if they were close and to take a distanced view of close things. It is important in strategy to know the enemy's sword and not to be distracted by insignificant movements of his sword.
