Rome, 117 AD. The golden age of Trajan fades, and shadows lengthen across the empire. Whispers of conspiracy slither through the Senate as prominent figures fall victim to an unseen hand, each marked with the chilling symbol of a serpent coiled around a poppy.  Dr. Livia Proculus, a brilliant paleographer haunted by her historian father's disappearance, recognizes a terrifying echo of his lost research in these deaths — a forgotten prophecy foretelling Rome's downfall.  Her world of hushed libraries and ancient texts collides with the brutal reality of the Subura, where Titus Cassius, a gladiator scarred by his past, seeks solace in the city's shadows.  Fate throws them together, a scholar and a fighter, an unlikely alliance forged in the heart of a conspiracy that threatens to shatter the empire.
Livia needs Titus’s knowledge of Rome's underbelly, a labyrinth of secrets and hidden dangers. Titus, drawn to Livia’s fierce intellect and hidden vulnerability, seeks a chance at redemption.  Together they embark on a perilous quest, deciphering cryptic messages in mosaics and forgotten scrolls, their clandestine meetings taking place in the moonlit ruins of the Forum. Their search leads them to a hidden cult, their worship centered around a forgotten god of chaos and destruction, a god whose symbol is the serpent and the poppy.  The cult's influence reaches the highest echelons of power, its tendrils wrapped around the very heart of the Senate.
