Gemstones

Gemstones hold a fascinating world beyond their outward beauty. While many people wear them for fashion or astrological reasons, only gemologists truly understand their complex nature. A gemstone can be mineral-based, organic like amber or pearl, or even synthetic. They're classified as natural, synthetic, or treated, with natural stones mined from the earth, synthetics manufactured to resemble real gems, and treated stones enhanced for appearance. Treatments include oiling, heating, and radiation, each altering the gem’s visual quality but sometimes fading over time. Composite and coated gemstones are complex to identify and often require special tools. Unfortunately, imitation gemstones made of glass are widespread and often passed off as genuine, leading to unknowing purchases. Despite the visual similarities, imitations lack the physical and chemical properties of natural gems. This intricate world of over 2000 gemstone types contrasts sharply with the common belief that only nine exist, revealing the importance of knowledge in this glittering trade.
