Kathi Rivers Shannon

Kathi Rivers Shannon is an American writer from Washington state. She writes memoir, fiction and nonfiction, and is best known for When the Larch Turn Gold. Her other books include Seven Trees and The Photographer’s Daughter (2026).

Kathi Shannon spent most of her life in North Central Washington. She now lives in Washougal, Washington. The Cascade Mountains and the sage steppe of Eastern Washington shape her writing. The people who live there also shape her work.

Her husband, Greg Shannon, is a photographer. For nearly forty years, the couple visited the Enchantment Lakes every October. The lakes are now famous. This annual trip led to her memoir When the Larch Turn Gold. The memoir includes her experience of ME/CFS. ME/CFS is short for myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome. The condition was debilitating. Her fiction and nonfiction appear in numerous publications.

Seven Trees was published by Next Chapter. The publisher gives its genre as contemporary fiction. The publisher calls it a coming-of-age novel. It blends historical fiction with suspense. The story is set in the summer of 1970. Annie Burgh, aged nineteen, keeps a small-town newspaper running. The Vietnam War divides her community. Her boyfriend Rick enlists in the Army. This prompts her to write an editorial. A draft dodger named John arrives with that editorial in hand. He asks her for help to escape to Canada. Annie hides him in the canyon homestead of her ancestors. She learns that John is not who he claims.

Family secrets then surface. These include a mysterious death, an abandoned grave and a diary. The diary holds personal and political revelations. Over five days, Annie confronts what she believes. She tests how far she will go for conviction, love and family.

The Photographer’s Daughter (2026) is her latest book. It is a mystery set in the North Cascades of Washington. The story begins in the spring of 2012. Addy leaves her graphic design job in Seattle. Addy came to the mountains to escape. She plans to track a wolverine as a citizen scientist. There she meets Logan Howard, a biologist. He studies a newly established wolf pack. Logan’s friend then disappears. The only clue is a ceramic platter. It is carved with the connected outlines of animals. Logan asks for help from Addy, who is an artist.

Their competing studies create tension. Secrets reaching across country borders begin to surface. Addy learns more about the missing man. Her feelings about her famous mother also change. The book also covers love, loss and unexpected connections.
Kathi Rivers Shannon and her husband continue their journeys in the mountains and high deserts. They collect stories along the way, both real and imagined.
